A young dynamic vibrating personality,  having specialised post-qualifications in Law, Public Administration, Management as well as a Doctorate (in Business Administration). He carries vast experience with him as the Mayor of Lucknow and later as a Union Minister, Government of India.

Inspite of having high lineage, he had a mind of his own and decided to make his Mark in public life in his own right with self-less service to the society.

PUBLIC LIFE:
His contribution to the masses is unparallel. Like his father, he chose Social Service as the primary goal. In that journey, he was elected Mayor of Lucknow in the year 1993. During that period, he was recognized as one of the youngest Mayors of the World. Later on, he chose to broaden his base and was elected as Member of Parliament in November, 1996 and has since been re-elected for the period November, 2002 to November, 2008. Subsequently, he was given additional responsibility by the Congress Party as Secretary of Congress Parliamentary Party in May 2003. On the 29th of January 2006 he took charge and was sworn in as a Minister of State in the Central Government with the Dept. of Steel, where he remained till 6^th April 2008. Resigning as an MP in May 2008, he joined the Bahujan Samaj Party as its National General Secretary. He was re-elected to Rajya Sabha in November 2008 for the third time consecutively. 

CONTRIBUTION TO SPORTS:
Dr. Akhilesh Das is an enthusiastic sports personality. He was National Doubles Champion in Badminton. Presently he is the Vice President of Badminton Association of India and also the Chairman of U. P. Badminton Association. Badminton is his first love but he does not leave the other sports behind. He is actively involved in establishing the Badminton Academy at Lucknow and has also gifted a world-class stadium to the BBD Campus recently.

CAUSE OF EDUCATION:
In his pursuit for Social Causes, when he was a Mayor, he realized that there is an acute need of QUALITY TECHNICAL & PROFESSIONAL education in this part of the Country. And accordingly, Babu Banarasi Das Educational Society was floated by him, through which the candle for higher education was lighted in Lucknow the State Capital of U.P. and the first Institution in this series was Babu Banarasi Das National Institute of Technology & Management with faculties of Engineering, Pharmacy, Architecture, Computers, Management and Education.

He earned a rightful place on the Board of "All India Council of Technical Education" where he was elected from the Rajya Sabha in 1998 and held office till end of 2004.

HORIZONS:
He has extensively traveled U.K., U.S.A., Japan, France, Switzerland, Spain & Portugal and he has attended several world seminars, UNO, Conference of Mayors (Japan).
